A Friendly Word of Warning

Hey folks. It's about time I showed you what my big project of the summer was.

I've been tackling a webcomic since June. I'm still very much a beginner at this, so I didn't attempt anything further than 11 pages of tight pencils. The point was to set a realistic goal and meet it---and I not only crossed the finish line, but I did so ahead of schedule! It was a great learning experience, and that's what matters most to me.

So there you have it. Here's the first 11 pages of something I hope to continue working on.

A Friendly Word of Warning is a loosely-autobiographical narration of my reluctance to go to college. But...there's a bit of a supernatural twist. Instead of actually leaving for school, I attend one in my sleep and find myself traveling between two realities.

Give it a read. This is only the beginning, I'll do more later.

5 Style Shift

There was a meme floating around somewhere challenging people to draw themselves in five different styles. This was a fun opportunity to study the work of artists I admire.

I totally didn't do these guys justice, so make sure you check out THEIR artwork!

  1. Zach Bellisimo (Snaggle-teeh)
  2. Stephane Tartelin
  3. Ben Caldwell
  4. Sam McKenzie
  5. Mad Rupert (mynameismad)

Summoned Elsewhere

This past week I've been working on more than just personal projects. A very talented friend of mine wrote a screenplay and roped us all in as cast and crew. It's been a fun learning experience. I'm just a comics kid, but I spose I can plug in to any sort of visual storytelling.

Here's what my mornings have been dedicated to. Photos by Katie Sivits.

In the mornings, we filmed. I grabbed lunch and then headed over to church to help out with set design for Vacation Bible School. They've got an Olympics theme going on, so one of the things they needed were some cardboard cut-outs of cheering people. They wanted something cartoony, so I doodled these guys up.

Sorry I never got around to taking pictures of the final cut-outs. I think I sniffed too much tempera paint.

Character Design Exercises

A 30-day drawing challenge is floating around Tumblr-- design a different monster girl each day for a month. I'd love to do this a little more seriously sometime in the future, but for now I'm just using it for a 30minute character design exercise. It's great practice.

Centaur Girl

Harpy Chick

Naga Lady

Slime Babe

Wendigo Woman

Maybe I'll squeeze out a couple more this summer!

Moleskine

Ok, so it isn't name brand,
but essentially I bought a dinky little travel sketchbook and I've started experimenting. This week I'm vacationing with my family in the city and I plan on doodling while I'm there, so you have that to look forward to. For now, here are the first few pages.

June Sketchdump

Hey folks.

I'm happy to say I'm right on track with the comic I'm working on. Three weeks of work, three pages drawn. Hang in there until September. I'll unleash stuff all at once.

In the meantime, here's just a couple scans of my sketchbook. Feels good to be doodling every day.
