A Brave Foot Forward

Our Environments, Props, & Structures class tackled a cityscape with this week's assignment. Using reference from either a local or other real-life location, we were to create a one page story in which a character exits a building with a drink in their hand and encounters a man in a banana suit.

Hey. I'm not the one who wrote the script.

Here's some photos I snapped on Broughton street.

The easiest storyline I could think of for my one-pager was a pretty token trope-- a guy makes a fool out of himself in front of a lady he is trying to impress. In my story, a guy exists a store on the street and notices a guy in banana suit is harassing a young woman. The banana suit guy is handing out fliers for a frozen banana stand down the the street---and he wont leave this chick alone. So our hero bravely intervenes, but as he steps in to ward the guy off, he slips on a banana peel and spills his fruit smoothie on the both of them.

Creature from the Black Lagoon

Another class I'm taking this quarter is Materials & Techniques for Sequential art. The first material our class experimented with was scratchboard. I've had a little experience with this medium before (junior high, maybe?) so I fared pretty well.

The assignment? Create a set of three scratchboard pieces that depict scenes from an old black and white horror film. I did my own take on The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

ORIGINAL CONCEPT SKETCHES:

Doodles while watching the film

Originally my creature was a diplocaulus, an prehistoric ambhibian.
The head shape did not work well.

COMPOSITION DEVELOPMENT:

My first idea for the 5x7. Decided this was too static and did not have enough texture.

The Dreaded Car Page

Our second assignment for Environments, Props, and Structures class covered automobiles--- a scary thought. Each assignment is a big challenge for me, but I guess that's healthy and stuff.

We were given a week to compose a comic page where a character exits a building, gets in a car, and then drives off. This required a LOT of reference on my part. Below are some helpful photos I snapped...photos of a car that did not belong to me. My apologies to whoever actually owns this BMW. I hope you're a fellow art student and understand that I just needed to gather some reference.

Originally, I had planned on drawing Pulaski House, a dorm at my college. The exiting sequence was hard to compose because the Pulaski stairways are a little wonky. I went with another structure, a house that was more simple and intuitive. To whomever may be the owner of this house, I'm sorry for being such a weirdo and standing in your yard and taking photos.

This was a struggle, but I think the page came together nicely. See for yourself.

Environments, Props, & Structures

I'm not a fan of drawing environments. Typical.
Thank goodness I'm taking a class that will force me to work on that.

The class covers what it says in the title. Our first assignment was to choose any structure in Savannah, GA and illustrate it however we wanted. I chose a cute little art studio in town and turned it into a donut shop.

REFERENCE PHOTOS:

Not much to explain. From there I gridded out the photograph and took some artistic liberties with it.

We're covering automobiles next--- stay tuned.
